El Rey

by gayouj on Jul.05, 2010, under News, Six Strings

Features

  • 25.5″ Scale
  • African Mahogany Neck
  • Cocobolo Fretboard
  • Tiger Maple Headstock Veneer
  • Two Way Truss Rod
  • Buffalo Bone Nut
  • Medium Nickel/Silver Fret Wire
  • MOP Inlay
  • 16″ Neck Radius
  • French Polish Finish, Blond Shellac (neck)
  • All Black Hardware
  • Strap Locks
  • GFS Dream 90 Pickups (P90′s in  a modified humbucker case)
  • Master Volume/Tone
  • 3-way Selector Switch
  • String-through-body Bridge

The look of this guitar is stunning but the best part about it is the pickup configuration.  Vintage P90 pickups have a truly unique sound but they are also know for their noise issues.  These are boutique level pickups that have been potted to eliminate microphonics and they are set up for some serious output; 8.4 K at the bridge and 8.2 K at the neck.  The best thing about them by far is that the neck pickup is reverse wound, such that when both pickups are selected the provide true humbucking performance (absolutely zero noise at rest, even with the gain dialed up as high as it will go).

Punch Drunk

Features

  • 610mm Scale
  • Tapered Poplar Neck
  • Red Oak Fretboard
  • Tung Oil Finish (neck)
  • Decorative Headstock Veneer
  • Buffalo Bone Nut
  • Medium Nickel/Silver Fret Wire
  • 16″ Neck Radius
  • Chrome Sound Hole Screens
  • Hand Carved Marawood Bridge
  • Brass Saddle
  • True Acoustic Soundboard (no neck-through)
  • Bridge-mount Piezoelectric Pickup
  • Chrome Output Jack
  • Chrome Strap Buttons
  • Box is sealed with a lacquer spray finish

The standard acoustic guitar is the most affordable instrument that I make.  It is very simple in its design; however you will not find another guitar like it that can match its tone or playability.  This is the “hot rod” of basic piezo pickup cigar box guitars.

Smokehouse Guitars in Brazil???

by gayouj on Jun.09, 2010, under News

New Smokehouse Guitars buddy Gustavo Ziller manages a blog at Update Or Die.  He contacted me recently out of interest in what I do and was cool enough to post about it there.

Here is the blog post that he wrote about me (in Portuguese).

Gustavo is also a lover of classic tube amps.  He has hooked up with two engineer buddies of his and they have started making their own brand.  They are just in the early start up period and are still keeping a low profile so that they can build up a good head of steam.  I can’t wait for them to go live with these things as I hope to host their amps at this site in the future.

Here is a demo of one of these very lush sounding tube amps.

Smokehouse Guitars at the Weins in August

by gayouj on May.10, 2010, under Events, News

I’ll be out at the Weins on August 7th for this event.  I’m donating a free electric guitar to the event that they will either raffle or auction off.  If you want the chance to win one of my instruments and get it signed by the performers there that evening as well as me, better get some tickets and come on out.

A Fun Little News Article

by gayouj on May.06, 2010, under News

Lukas Nelson is a friend of Smokehouse Guitars.  My wife an I were out to see him and his band maybe a month and a half ago.  A reporter saw my wife and I being all buddy-buddy with him and the promoters who put on the show so she pounced on us for an interview.  I didn’t have the heart to tell her that we’re a couple of nobodies… :)

Cute article though.

New Guitar Categories

by gayouj on May.02, 2010, under News

I’m no longer making the distinction between “Deluxe Guitars” and other guitars on this site.  Every guitar that I make is deluxe, therefore using this label for a subset is nonsensical.

Guitars are now just categorized by string count (currently 3, 4, and 6 strings).  I currently have resonators in a group by themselves as I only have two examples posted here.  When I add more I might break things up further.

Inventory Page has been killed

by gayouj on Apr.27, 2010, under News

I scrapped the inventory page (it was the one that showed my inventory of cigar boxes).  One, it was way out of date because it’s a pain in the ass to keep up with and, two, my customers rarely ever refer to it anyway.  If there were a bunch of people using the page I’d go to the trouble to keep it up but I’m not going to go through the hassle if it’s not helping anyone.

If you would like to see what I have in stock as far as boxes are concerned, go ahead and contact me directly and I’ll set you up.

The American Education System

by gayouj on Apr.24, 2010, under News

Hey, guys.  I’ve never asked any of you for a favor but I am tonight.  If you are a parent with a kid in school, are in school yourself, or if you are a teacher or in any way involved with the school system, I’m asking that you go to the following link and have a read:

http://geoffreygreer.wordpress.com/2010/03/13/end-totalitarian-teac…

This article at the link is not asking for money, it is not asking for clicks, and there is no advertising or anything behind it.  It is the candid, honest sharing of information about what the deal is with our school system today.  It’s a real eye-opener and it has the potential to change a lot of your views about everything.  At the very least, just do me, Josh Gayou (Smokehouse Guitars), a personal favor and read about two or three paragraphs.  Give it that much of a chance and see if you don’t feel compelled to read the whole damned thing.

I figure if enough people read this, if enough people spread it around, things might just start to change.  I don’t hold out hope since I’m a realist, but it can’t hurt to try.

Thanks all for your patience.

MojoBone Works Slides Are Not Currently Available

by gayouj on Apr.19, 2010, under News

Hey all.  My buddy Randy has asked that I take down the MojoBone Works slides pages of my site indefinitely so that he can devote his full attention to some other matters.  Just about all of us in the CBG movement do this as an on-the-side type of thing and are well aware that this will happen from time to time.  If and when Randy gets back into the swing of things I will get his products back up here at Smokehouse Guitars.  Until then, please don’t pester him by asking when he’ll start making slides again or if he can just make an exception.  He’s a busy dude and has stuff he just needs to handle.  Let’s all just with him the best and hope that he’ll be able to come back to doing what he does in the future.  Speaking for the entire community, a world without MojoBone Works custom slides is a little bit less cool indeed.
